Multifamily Developments Nearing Public Hearings, Special Senate Election This Week

A look ahead at what's happening in Ridgewood and Glen Rock this week.

Monday

Municipal offices and the libraries will be closed for the day in honor of Columbus Day. Public schools in Ridgewood will be closed for the day, and Glen Rock's will see early dismissals, both for staff development.

Tuesday

The Ridgewood Planning Board will meet in the village hall courtroom at 7:30 p.m. On the agenda is discussion of a possible amendment to the village's master plan, which would accommodate four proposed high-density, multifamily residential developments in and around the central business district.

The board left the discussion last month with planning officials working on a draft amendment to the master plan. New zones would be created at the sites of the four development proposals, and once the details are hammered out, the board will soon open the discussion to public hearings.

Ridgewood will also be holding in-person voter registrations at the clerk's fifth floor village hall office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and in the library lobby from 4:30 to 9 p.m. New residents and new voters 18 years and older are eligible to register for the Nov. 5 general election, which includes races for the governor, state legislature and county board of chosen freeholders.

Wednesday

Polls will be open for the special senate election to fill out the remainder of longtime Sen. Frank Lautenberg's term. Newark Mayor Cory Booker once had a lead of over 30 points in the polls against Steve Lonegan, a former mayor of Bogota.

The Democrat's still sizable lead has narrowed in recent polls to a margin as tight as 11 points. In recent weeks, Lonegan has latched onto Pres. Obama's health care law as a central issue, mirroring the shutdown politics in Washington. Polls are open in Ridgewood and Glen Rock from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Glen Rock Council will be holding a public meeting in Borough Hall at 8 p.m. No meeting agenda is available yet, but check back with Patch.

Thursday

Local history is on the agenda Oct. 17.

At the Ridgewood Library, historian Peggy Norris will be leading a session on Ancestry.com, the website used to plot family history, beginning at 10 a.m.

The first public viewing hours for the Ridgewood Historical Society's new exhibit, "A Community's Journey," will be held at the Schoolhouse Museum from 1 to 3 p.m. The exhibit charts several facets of the village's history, with an emphasis on increasing diversity. Find the Patch preview of the exhibit here.

Over in Glen Rock, the library will be screening The Rock in the Glen, a 50-minute film about the borough's history, at 7 p.m. The film itself is historical, first produced in 1964 for the borough's 70th birthday. Seats can be reserved by calling the library at 201-670-3970.
