Helping Kids Play Hockey, One Donation at a Time

Wyckoff student's Web site solicits equipment for city youths.

Ice hockey is not a game easily played; any committed player knows the sport is costly. From sticks to masks to pads to skates, it can easily cost hundreds of dollars for equipment that sees much wear and tear, making the sport prohibitive for the less fortunate.  But with a Wyckoff resident's help, kids from urban areas will be able to suit up and hit the ice—for free. Brandon Nicodemo, a junior at Ramapo High School and member of the school's ice hockey team, has launched a Web site, www.secondtimerink.com, to solicit donations of used hockey equipment for distribution to economically disadvantaged youths. "It's nice to help out and make someone happy," he said. Although its only been active for a few weeks, Nicodemo is already receiving…

Ending Stellar Season, Pietrantuono Bounced From States

RHS senior competes in NJSIAA tournament down the shore.

ATLANTIC CITY—A two-hour car ride down the Garden State Parkway, a season of top-notch wrestling, and a NJSIAA pass were all New Jersey's top wrestlers needed to get into Boardwalk Hall yesterday, as Friday kicked off the annual NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships.  Senior Sam Pietrantuono was Ridgewood High School's lone entry in not only the 140-pound bracket, but also the entire tournament. As a standout cornerback for the Maroons football squad, representing one's school is difficult enough on a team, but making the trip down to Atlantic City to wrestle alone was a greater task. Last night's event included the preliminary and pre-quarter final rounds of the tournament. Any wrestler who scored a win in the preliminary round was …

A Decade in the Making, Maroons Upset Fair Lawn

Ridgewood girls beat Cutters, 64-53 for first state playoff victory in 10 years, coach says.

FAIR LAWN—It had all the makings of a great high school basketball game—history, proximity and magnitude. The No. 13 Maroons may have come into the first-round state sectional game against No. 4 Fair Lawn as underdogs, but they neither acted nor played like it. Working hard from the beginning, Ridgewood opened up a second half lead and never looked back, beating a tough Cutters club, 64-53. "We knew it was going to be a good game. Our girls were waiting for this one," said coach Meaghan Palmer of her first postseason win and her team's first state victory in a decade. Ridgewood had a good showing as the Fair Lawn gym seemed split between Maroon and Cutter fans. The game held additional significance for Fair Lawn, as the Maroons beat it in …

Ridgewood 'Swallows Tough Pill' In Indian Hills Loss

The Maroons come up short to the Braves, in hard fought battle.

OAKLAND—A familiar stage was set as Ridgewood entered the Indian Hills gym to spoil the Braves senior night. Early on, it was obvious that what the Maroons lacked in size, they would make up for in heart. Unfortunately, heart cannot win every game, and Indian Hills beat Ridgewood 66-61. "These games are always a tough pill to swallow," coach Mike Troy said. If the opposing team's size was not intimidating enough, Braves nation came out roaring to support its boys squad. However, in true Maroon fashion, the Ridgewood boys took the floor motivated, scoring five quick points. This offensive surge could only momentarily silence the crowd. Four careless turnovers by Ridgewood and three three-pointers forced Troy to regroup with a timeout. …

Boys Soar to Victory in Senior Sendoff

Ridgewood basketball bests Bergenfield at senior celebration.

Appropriately on senior night, it was the senior captain that dominated. As the Maroons boys basketball bid to its five seniors farewell, the team rolled over Bergenfield 57 to 35. Graduating captain James Albano capped over an amazing season by torching Bergenfield with 32 points en route to victory in front of fans and family last night. The monster game was his seventh straight in double digits and fourth consecutive game with 20 or more points. In fact, Albano was only held under 10 points once this season (Feb. 2 against Passaic High School). His season was paced by a 44-point outing verse Bloomfield Feb. 5. Ridgewood will lose four seniors besides Albano. Jack Simmons, Joe Peabody, Alex Lunenfeld, and Jimmy Donnelly were all honored …

BOYS AND GIRLS SWIMMING WIN STATE SECTIONALS

Ridgewood swim clubs both claim sectional titles.

WAYNE—In two close matches, both the boys and girls swim teams vanquished opponents on their way to state sectional titles. The Ridgewood boys bested Ridge High School early in the afternoon, setting the stage for a double title at the Passaic County Technical Institute. Separated by only two points going into the last event—a 400-meter freestyle relay—against Montclair High School, the Maroon girls eeked out a win for their own sectional title.

Highwaywomen Press Maroons to Defeat

Teaneck's pressure too much for girl's basketball, Ridgewood loses 64-52.

Often, there's a reason a team posts a good record. After an initial lead by Ridgewood, Teaneck adjusted, intensified its defense and played within itself to post a solid 64-52 win yesterday. Despite having three double-digit scorers, the Ridgewood girls basketball team (11-11) committed 30-plus turnovers en route to the home loss against Teaneck (20-2). "We definitely fought hard. It wasn't for lack of effort," head coach Meaghan Palmer said. The Highwaywomen wouldn't let Ridgewood get out of the backcourt. Any gains the Maroons made on defense were often instantly squashed by Teaneck's pressure D. In the face of Teaneck's tenacity, the Maroons were plagued by needless giveaways. "It's impossible to win when you give up more than 30 …

Basketball: Girls Seeded 13th, Boys 15th

Maroon boys and girls receive postseason rankings.

As the winter sports seasons wind down for all high school sports, preparations for postseason play commence. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced playoff opponents today for the girls and boys basketball teams. The Maroon girls enter the North I, Group IV playoffs seeded No. 13 with a road berth March 2. Fortunately for the girls, they'll face a Fair Lawn team they beat 77 to 70 Feb. 12. A young club, the girls have battled to an 11-10 record. In their victory over Fair Lawn (13-8), three players hit double digits in scoring (Kelci Smesko—29 points, Meghan Roxas—19 points, and Caitlin Alvaro—14 points) on their way to a thrilling triple-overtime win. Before its March playoff date, Ridgewood takes on Teaneck…

Now Comes the Hard Part: Get Out Those Plows, Shovels

Schools open on delayed schedule as residents, businesses dig out from the storm

Although some slushy streets remain, the village snow plows have cleared roads, allowing solid driving conditions throughout Ridgewood as storm clouds give way to skies streaked with blue. Schools were opening but with a two-hour delay, with b3us schedules postponed accordingly. Morning kindergarten sessions have been canceled, but the afternoon sessions will begin at their normal times. A notice on the school board Web site reminded parents that children in grades 1-5 who have not ordered lunches must bring a bag lunch to school. There will not be sufficient time for children to go home for lunch when there is a delayed opening. Local businesses were digging out from the storm that dumped 13 inches of snow, according to the National …
