Physical education teacher represents Byrd School.
The Glen Rock Board of Education announced at its February 11 board meeting that Byrd School physical education teacher Mike Karcher was voted its educator of the year. Patch interviewed Karcher in 2012 when he was awarded Byrd School teacher of the year. Here's what he said about teaching: Why did you gravitate toward teaching? Did you always know you wanted to be a teacher? I decided I wanted to be a teacher when I was a senior in high school. I loved sports and fitness and enjoyed working with kids. Glen Rock High School's Tracy Trobiano was named as the top girls soccer coach for the 2012 season, the Record said Monday. Trobiano, in her 18th year at GRHS, guided the girls to a Group 2 state championship with a 4-0 defeat of Bordentown. The team finished 23-1, the only blemish coming against the state's top ranked team, Northern Highlands. As you might expect, Trobiano gave credit to the players for the breakaway season. "I really think with the amount of talent on this team, the ownership [for the success] has to go to the kids," Trobiano told the paper.
Lower soccer field should be ready a few weeks later, according to officials.
Many Glen Rock teen athletes will soon be getting their first taste of home field advantage since 2010. According to school officials at Monday night's board meeting, the multi-purpose field at the high school is expected to be ready for the boys soccer game on Monday, Oct. 15. The girls team, which hasn't played a game at home in two years, should be able to get a Glen Rock welcome the following day. The big football game against Hawthorne on Friday for Homecoming Weekend also looms large. The fields were initially expected to open on Sept. 15. School officials approved a referendum-related plan to add turf to both the multi-purpose field and the lower soccer field, along with a replacement of the track, in the spring. Among the major …
