GR Girl Scouts Construct Cars at Powderpuff Derby

Thirteen brownies and juniors built their own racers and competed this past Saturday.

Hamilton School Girl Scout Juniors and Brownie Troop 4018 held its first powder puff derby on Feb. 23, akin to a Pinewood Derby their boy scout bretheren have long participated in.  The Glen Rock girls were invited to use the track by Glen Rock Boy Scout Troop 15 once their derby had ended. The boys stayed and helped volunteer with keeping track of score. Parent Kelly Verkem explained how it got started. According to her, a brownie member had an older sibling who made a soapbox car every year. She wanted to as well but was not allowed to participate in the boy scout events. "She finally decided should would just make a car and ask the scouts if she could run her car too. Her mom metioned this to a few other mom's and they got together and …

Girl Scouts Pushing On with Anti-Litter Pledge

Troops 152 and 1136 in Ridgewood are hoping to eliminate littering in Ridgewood.

Two Ridgewood Girl Scout troops are continuing their mission of keeping the village's parks clear of trash as they reach their bronze service project goal. The 5th grade troop at Ridge (Troop 152) and GW-based Troop 1136 (7th grade) picked up three "giant" bags of trash at the skate park in roughly 30 minutes. Picking up the trash is only one part of the initiative. The girls in 5th and 7th grades have been attaching posters to garbage bins throughout the village with a slogan of "Be Green, Not a Litter Machine' Keep Ridgewood Parks and Fields Clean!" Sports coaches have also been asked for their help, and appeals made to the village council for help. Other efforts have come in the form of a self-produced video, "Leave Less, Pick Up Your …

Thousands of Girl Scouts ‘Bridge’ Across GWB, Kickoff Centennial

“Bridging” is a traditional ceremony among Girl Scouts, signifying the passage from one level of scouting to the next; organizers decided to do it on a large-scale this year to mark the organization’s passage into its own next century.

As many as 2,500 Girl Scouts crossed the George Washington Bridge Sunday as part of an historic event sponsored by the Girl Scout Councils of New Jersey marking the 100th anniversary celebration of Girl Scouting. New Jersey’s First Lady Mary Pat Christie met with some of the girls and spoke after the Girl Scouts’ ceremonial “bridging” event, during which thousands of girls, parents and others walked across the bridge’s southern walkway, starting and ending in Fort Lee. Other speakers Sunday included President and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey Helen Wronski, Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, Bergen County Executive Kathe Donovan, Deputy Executive Director, and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Bill Baroni. Earlier this …

Girl Scouts Create Litter Awareness Campaign

Troop 152 of Ridge Elementary putting up posters in the hopes of reducing litter on village fields

The young ladies of Junior Girl Scout Troop 152 at Ridge School told the Village Council Wednesday night its recent campaign to combat littering is in full swing. Working with Parks and Recreation Department heads Tim Cronin and Nancy Bigos, the nine 5th grade Girl Scouts said they intend to make Ridgewood an even more beautiful place than it already is. "We’ve noticed that there is always litter," ranging from soda and water bottles to snack wrappers and other items, one young Girl Scout told the council. "This is upsetting to us and we decided to do something about it by starting our own anti-litter campaign as part of our Bronze Leadership Award." The troop placed posters up throughout the village exclaming the rhyme: “Be Green, Not a …

More Than a Fresh Coat of Paint

Volunteer's project brings new life to 'dreary' annex

Temperatures were in the mid-90s in Glen Rock Monday and despite the few fans scattered around the busy workspace, the main room of the Municipal Annex wasn't much cooler. Scattered around the room were six young women and one young mom, each hard at work, and not a single one complaining. While it would be safe to assume your average teenager would much rather be down the shore on a scorching summer day like this, 17-year-old Brittany Foley and her crew have instead volunteered to give a little something back. The Glen Rock High Schooler and Girl Scout is working on her Gold Award project: reanimating the Municipal Annex, a building used by many groups, including Glen Rock's Senior Citizens Club, Baseball Association and Beekeepers Club…
