Glen Rock High School announced its Students of the Month for March: Citizens of the Month: The Glen Rock High School Citizens of the Month for March are two caring students who use their talents to help others: Jasmine Pak and Eleanor Shaw. Recently they organized the very successful Music Against Malaria event, a benefit concert at Glen Rock High School. They were involved in all aspects of the event, from auditioning acts to publicity, and the eventual organization of the concert, which went flawlessly. With their efforts, the students were able to eventually purchase over 400 nets to help prevent the spread of Malaria. GRHS is very proud of these two Citizens of the Month. Date still "highly dependent" on good weather in next few weeks, school official says.
A spell of inclement weather has pushed back the expected opening date of the remodeled Glen Rock High School baseball field, but school officials believe May 1 is a realistic target date. "I must stress that the May 1st completion date is highly dependent on satisfactory weather condition in the weeks ahead," Business Administrator Michael Rinderknecht told Patch. Upgrades to the baseball field – budgeted separately from the other athletic field projects at the high school – include new sod, protective fences, field re-grading, dugouts, a sprinkler system. School board president Sheldon Hirschberg says two other sports teams will join the championship Glen Rock girls soccer team.
It will be a march of champions on July 4th, 2013 in Glen Rock. The champion girls high school varsity basketball team and boys bowling team will join the state champ girls soccer team, school board president Sheldon Hirschberg said Thursday night. Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren pitched the idea, according to Hirschberg. In addition, a number of elementary school students will also march in the Memorial Day Parade.

Veteran teacher moving to Idaho to be closer to family.
Theresa "Terry" Choma, a long-time Glen Rock High School math teacher, will be retiring at the end of the school year. Choma has taught the language of numbers for 21 years at the borough high school. But once school ends in June, she'll be moving out to Idaho to be closer to her grandchildren. The departing educator said working with students and colleagues aided greatly in her teaching success. "My favorite part of teaching has been seeing my students get a math concept after struggling to own it," she said, attributing her success to student questions and insights along with supportive colleagues and administrators. "Over the years, I have learned that the best way to help students do this is to involve them in the learning process." …

Administration has recommended requiring all middle and high school students to pay a single fee to "defray" costs and boost participation.
The Glen Rock Board of Education is considering making large-scale changes to its student participation policy likely to generate controversy. According to school board member Rona McNabola, the board is expected to vote at its next meeting on moving from a student participation fee policy to implementing a student activity fee policy for all middle an high schoolers. "The recommendation that came from the administration is that the proper way to do it would be an activity fee that you collect from everybody," McNabola said. "The idea being two purposes for the ease of record keeping; the other is we would like all of our kids to participate in something." New opening date pushed back to May.
The opening of the Glen Rock High School baseball field has been delayed by a month, according to a report in the Glen Rock Gazette. The paper reports the new target is May 1 as a result of lost days due to weather. The varsity team will have to play scheduled home games at opponent fields, according to the article. Contractor Turco Golf also missed its target competion date for work to the multi-purpose field.

Physical education teacher represents Byrd School.
The Glen Rock Board of Education announced at its February 11 board meeting that Byrd School physical education teacher Mike Karcher was voted its educator of the year. Patch interviewed Karcher in 2012 when he was awarded Byrd School teacher of the year. Here's what he said about teaching: Why did you gravitate toward teaching? Ted Burke and the staff at GRTV have compiled some of the top highlights and moments from the 2013 Glen Rock varsity football season. The team finished 3-6 on the year, losing a four games by seven or fewer points. It also christened the new turf field in 2012, a bittersweet moment for some team members. The Glen Rock school board on Thursday awarded the contractor finishing its $4.5 million athletic complex project a bid to also remodel the high school baseball field. New York-based Turco Golf, which has drawn mixed reviews for delays and large change orders on the larger turf and drainage project, will be performing the baseball field work at a price of $365,000. Subject to weather, work to the baseball field is expected to begin on March 1 and be completed by April 1.
