Ted Burke and the staff at GRTV have compiled some of the top highlights and moments from the 2013 Glen Rock varsity football season. The team finished 3-6 on the year, losing a four games by seven or fewer points. It also christened the new turf field in 2012, a bittersweet moment for some team members. The district expects the project to cost $365,000, with the field ready for play on April 1.
The Glen Rock school board on Thursday awarded the contractor finishing its $4.5 million athletic complex project a bid to also remodel the high school baseball field. New York-based Turco Golf, which has drawn mixed reviews for delays and large change orders on the larger turf and drainage project, will be performing the baseball field work at a price of $365,000. Subject to weather, work to the baseball field is expected to begin on March 1 and be completed by April 1. According to the district, updages include: Though connected to the main project, the funding for the baseball field upgrades will be drawn out of the capital outlay fund. A world-class pianist and senior at Glen Rock High School will be holding a free piano recital on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. in the high school coir room. A native of South Korea, Jae Young Kim has performed in some of the world's top conservatories, including Carnegie Hall. He has received numerous awards in both the U.S. and Korea, including his most recent second-place prize at the Korean Radio Broadcasting New York International Music Competition this year. Kim also took home the grand prize at the Music Teachers National New York State Senior Piano Competition. He studies piano with Douglas Humpherys, Piano Chair of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

District going out to bid on the baseball field on Dec. 18; expects to dip into an $800,000 capital fund to pay for a series of upgrades.
Now that its high school athletic field project is pressed against its budget, the Glen Rock school board will have to dip into an emergency capital fund to pay upcoming bills. With a $176,000 change order approved Monday, costs for the referendum portion of the project are at $4.5 million of the budgeted $4.6 million. The district will have to dip into its capital budget to finish up the baseball-related work, according to school board president Rona McNabola. According to state law, any money specifically budgeted to referendum work can not exceed the voter-passed budget figure unless a waiver is granted by the county. The district can pay for projects with its capital budget, however. The baseball field work falls under that category. …

In a sign of the times, the traditional student newspaper makes way for the student news site.
Up until this year, Glen Rock High School students would have each month found their student newspaper, the Glen Echo, stacked high on tables throughout the school. But in a fast paced world, where most teenagers and young adults, especially, get their news from online sources, the print publication was quickly becoming a vestige of the past. So when Jason Toncic entered his first year teaching English at the school and advising its student paper, it was clear that one of his first tasks would be adapting his journalism class to changes in the industry. This culminated in an online edition of the paper, which the Echo launched Tuesday. “I wanted students to have experience with an online paper before they went off to college,” Toncic said…

The following news release was sent by the Glen Rock Public Schools System. A new member of the teaching staff at Glen Rock High School has been awarded both a scholarship and grant from the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Educational Foundation. Oren Levi, who joined the Science Department as a first-year physics teacher, is the recipient of a $5,000 AFCEA STEM Teacher Scholarship, along with a Teaching Tools grant for each of the next three years that he continues teaching a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subject. Here's the list: Math Department Janina Wnorowski – GRHS welcomes Janina, who received both her Master’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree from Rutgers University. Over the next few months, a series of new security measures will be introduced at Glen Rock High School and Middle School with the goal of providing improved security for students and staff. Phase 1 will begin on the first day of classes –Wednesday, Sept. 5 – when new limitations will be put into place for gaining access to the building on school days. The school moves from #28 to #4 in New Jersey Monthly's biennial ranking of the best high schools in the state.
'Rockers can now proudly say they have a bonafide top-five high school after Glen Rock High School shot up the New Jersey Monthly Magazine's rankings of the state's public high schools. GRHS jumped from 28th place in 2010 to 4th place in 2012 on the just-released biennial ranking of 328 public high schools in the state, among the biggest increases on the list. “We are very pleased to be recognized as one of the top schools in New Jersey and honored to be in such fine company,” said second-year principal John Arlotta. “We are very proud of our school and its wonderful teachers and students. Cost to replace unsuitable soil at Glen Rock High School have tallied $800,000 but a meeting next week could see that figure reduced, according to a report.
The Glen Rock school district could be closing in on what it will have to fork over to cover the costs of bad soil found at its multimillion dollar field renovation project at the high school. According to a report in the Glen Rock Gazette, the school board's operations committee will be meeting with contractor Turco Golf on Wed., Aug. 15. and should have a better idea of its financial state on the project. At its July 8 meeting, the district informed the public that "unsuitable" soil was found at the high school sports complex must be removed and replaced for any building to continue construction. Um, Glenrocker, I didn't quite say that work shouldn't be started now. What I said is that the job shouldn't be done half-assed. If you're going to rebuild the ballfield essentially from scratch, do it right--level the field, grass infield, proper dugouts/and fencing, sprinkler system and a decent sized backstop.
