Winning a state title would define the season for most teams –– but it's just one part of what made the 2012 girls varsity team special.
After capping off a banner 23-1 season with a Group II state championship, the Glen Rock High School girls soccer team received word that the party won't be over until July. Appearing at the school board meeting Monday for the celebration, borough council members told the team will have the town renamed in their honor for a day. They'll also be leading the procession of floats during the July 4 parade. “It would be a great way for you guys to come out,” Councilman Michael O'Hagan said. Although the team's athletic accomplishments are impressive, coaches and community members said the collective are even more impressive as individuals. ”They’re even better young ladies than they are soccer players,” Athletic Director Frank Violante said. …

There's a new champion to be reckoned with. The Glen Rock girls soccer team was crowned Group 2 state champions at the College of New Jersey Sunday, dominating Bordentown 4-0. It's the Lady Panthers' first state championship trophy since 2003 and potentially the best season in school history. The only blemish on the 23-win season came against Northern Highlands, considered one of the nation's best teams. At Ewing, NJ on Sunday, the offense rocketed 18 shots at the Bordentown defense. Grace Taylor sliced two into the back of the net, while Sophie Lederer and Sarah Fiorini each scored one apiece. Per the box score, the defense allowed only three shots on goal from Bordentown.
