Sandy Makeup Days Still Scheduled for April in Glen Rock

As it stands, students are going to school on April 10-12 in the borough.

Until told otherwise, the Glen Rock school board is still planning on making up lost Hurricane Sandy days during the April break, school board president Rona McNabola told Patch last week. Schools were closed for eight days in late October and November due to the storm. The district lost eight instructional days and must still make up three days to fulfill state requirements. In January the board passed its 2012-2013 school calendar, which calls for days to be made up from the April break beginning Friday, April 12 and moving backward. "It has been many years since we have had to follow through on this but that is why we put it out there when we approve the calendar," McNabola said. GR School Officials Still Undecided on Sandy Makeup Days

To make up days lost to Hurricane Sandy, the school board could chop away at April break or consider a series of alternatives, though no final decision has yet been made.

As it stands, Glen Rock students can expect to see at least three days of their April break shortened resulting from Sandy-related school closings. But that's not written in stone. At Monday night's regular school board meeting, Interim Superintendent Ray Albano said the district must recoup three full instructional days to fulfill the state's required 180 instructional day minimum. Schools were closed for eight days due to widespread power outages and safety hazards in the form of downed power lines and trees. Three snow days were built into the calendar and the district made up two additional days by holding school during what had initially been a teacher convention break. Good point Mr Hahn. I was told that a half day counts the same as a full day anyway although not sure if its true.   more ›
