Report Concludes Violence, Vandalism Low at Ridgewood Schools

A total of 14 incidents reported in all district schools between July and December.

By and large, Ridgewood students are well behaved, administrators concluded upon hearing the district's state-mandated violence and vandlism report Monday night. Ridgewood High School Assistant Principal Basil Pizzuto presented the mid-year figures on documented behavioral issues reported in the 2012-2013 school year. As part of the state's new anti-bullying bill, the state requires that the district tabulate instances of violence, vandalism, weapons, substance abuse, as well as harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB). According to Pizutto, between July and December, one incident of violence was reported, two instances of vandalism, two weapons were brought, five substance abuse cases were documented and four cases of HIB. Sorry RWDsRiches, kicking is gym lockers is an everyday occurrence at RHS. Just ask any gym teacher or coach. I recently spoke with an RHS coach who told me (and I quote) "Theft at RHS is the number one sporting activity". And how do you make the jump from the underreporting of theft in RHS to "home school your kids"?   more ›

Five Acts of Violence in Village Schools Documented During First Half of Year

Ridgewood High School co-principal Basil Pizzuto presented the findings of the "Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying" and "Vandalism and School Violence" reports to the school board.

Five incidents in Ridgewood schools fell under the state's new "Harassment Intimidation Bullying" standards during the first half of the school year, according to Ridgewood High co-principal Basil Pizzuto. Unlike in years past, with the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (ABBRA) procedures now in place, district officials are required to initiate a formal investigation into allegations of harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) that fall under the guidelines in 2011-2012. The district has tight timelines and faces process audits in completing investigations and has vocally expressed its support of the intent of the laws but opined it fundamentally changes the relationship educators have with students and parents. In his presentation to …

Clementi's Lover 'Uncomfortable' with Webcam Pointed on Them

Mystery man "M.B." testifies in trial against Dharun Ravi, the Rutgers roommate of Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after allegedly having his trysts broadcast by Ravi in September of 2010

Tyler Clementi's lover saw the webcam of Dharun Ravi turned to him when they were intimate and thought it "strange," according to published reports from the trial. "I had just glanced over my shoulder and I noticed there was a webcam that was faced toward the direction of the bed," said the man, identified only by the initials M.B., according to CBS News. "Just being in a compromising position and seeing a camera lens – it just stuck out to me." Clementi, of Ridgewood, committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge just days after his Rutgers roommate, Dharun Ravi, now 20, allegedly placed his webcam atop his computer aimed toward Clementi's bed in the fall of 2010. The prosecution has charged Ravi, of Plainsboro, with bias …

Ridge Elementary Students Fight Bullying With Creative Flair

Students made a video to a teacher's favorite song to 'stand up' to bullying

Ridge Elementary School students aren't going to tolerate it. And they're not shy about it either. In fact, they'll tell you they don't support bullying through a catchy, popular song. Ridge Principal Jean Schoenlank, 5th Grade teacher Andrea Petrone and Technology Coordinator Rachel Oldenburger presented the school board with a video students produced to take a stand against bullying, the aptly-titled "Stand Up." Petrone enthusiastically explained that she'd been humming country-pop group Suglarland's song "Stand Up" for quite some time. The song's lyrics touched her, she said, and as the national and local focus on bullying prevention continued to grow, it dawned on her. "I kept thinking... in Open Circle (a discussion group with …
