In addition, limited service from High Bridge to Newark on the Raritan Valley Line will be restored.  Train schedules will be available at njtransit.com, the agency said.  The agency said a new discounted ferry service will also begin between Hoboken and Pier 79 in Midtown Manhattan, a move designed to ease congestion at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. NJ Transit Axes Free Travel for Non-Union Employees

New policy goes into effect January 2013.

New Jersey Transit's non-union employees will no longer be granted free travel on the agency's rail, light rail and bus lines as of January 2013.  According to NJT Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder, the board of directors voted Monday to approve the elimination of the 30-year-old policy, as had been anticipated.  The policy allowed non-union employees and non-union retirees to use the transit system free-of-charge for personal purposes. Under the new policy, free travel for non-union employees will only be granted for work purposes.  Snyder said the change is part of an ongoing effort to implement cost cutting measures that make the agency more accountable, transparent and efficient. "1.6 million [dollars] is estimated not to be collected with the …

NJ Transit May Eliminate Free Travel for Some Employees

The board of trustees will consider whether or not to remove policy for non-union members.

NJ Transit on Monday proposed eliminating a policy that allows unlimited free travel on rail, light rail, and bus lines for the agency's non-union employees, according to NJT Spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. The policy, which has been in effect for 30 years, will be considered by the NJT Board of Directors at their meeting Monday, Oct. 15. If approved by the board, it will be subject to Gov. Chris Christie's veto period, Snyder said. The change would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013, resulting in non-union employees and non-union retirees no longer being able to use the transit system free-of-charge for personal purposes, according to a press release from NJT. “Moving forward, NJ Transit must continue to sufficiently consider the interests of our …

GWB Traffic Nightmare Could Begin Friday, Last All Summer

State, Port Authority warn of "significant" eastbound delays because of Cross Bronx bridge repairs, urge drivers to use mass transit, and to expect bus delays into the city through Labor Day.

This summer could be remembered as a traffic hell by the millions of people who travel east over the George Washington Bridge thanks to the closure of a lane on the oft-congested Cross Bronx Expressway from this Friday through Labor Day. The lane closure will take place on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which spans the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx. The bridge is already a chokepoint, as traffic from both levels of the GWB merge onto one roadway. Several other significant roadways feed into and out of the span, including the Harlem River Drive and Major Deegan Expressway. NJDOT officials are urging motorists to take mass transit into New York if possible and consider an “alternate route” or travel during off-peak hours “…

Easy Commute to Ho-Ho-Kus Station Made More Difficult by Construction

Work on small roadway that connects Ridgewood to the Ho-Ho-Kus train station begins on Monday, May 21.

Those accustomed to taking the easy route to the Ho-Ho-Kus Train Station from Ridgewood might have to go it the long way for a few weeks due to construction. According to the Ridgewood Police Department, the small strip of Brookside Ave. that conjoins the neighboring municipalities, will be closed for NJ Transit construction starting on May 21. The work, a replacement of the track crossing area with some paving on the approaches, is expected to last between one and two weeks, police said. There will still be pedestrian access for walking commuters, police said in a Facebook messsage. The quickest route to the HHK train station from those in the Willard area appears to be taking W. Glen Ave. to N. Maple in Ho-Ho-Kus.
