Mother's Day is May 12: Here Are Some Last Minute Ideas

From all-you-can-drink mimosas to white and green asparagus to New Jersey's wine trail, Mother's Day 2013 could just be the tastiest holiday until Thanksgiving.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Patch is bringing you a quick guide to the best bets for Mother’s Day activities in Bergen County. And don't forget: reservations are most definitely recommended.   In Hasbrouck Heights, the much lauded Ivy Inn is offering a Mother’s Day brunch seatings from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 1:30 p.m. Look for a 2-course prix fixe menu for $29 per person including — and this is crucial for the discerning mother — one mimosa, bloody mary or screwdriver.   For the mother who likes to sleep in, the Paramus restaurant Chakra, is offering Sunday lunch and dinner selection from 1 to 8 p.m. The three-course menu costs $54 per person. Chef Thomas Ciszak will be cooking some of his favorite dishes, many of them …

Baste Gourmet Fizzles, Not Sizzles

Too many inconsistencies at the new gourmet chicken restaurant on Garber Square

The word "baste" brings up thoughts of perfectly golden, crispy roasted chicken sizzling away in its juices and butter. I must have passed by Baste Gourmet Restaurant at 26 Garber Square a dozen times before deciding to dine there one evening. There are some definite victories for the new chicken restaurant run by the Axia Taverna restaurant team in Tenafly, particularly in what it specializes in. But there are also many flaws – from the food down to the service. If you are visiting Baste for their specialty items – the Roasted Chicken and Charcoal Grilled Chicken – you won't be disappointed. The former is perfectly roasted with a golden crispy skin and is served with roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts, which isn't mentioned on the menu…

Village Green Restaurant's New Face

The Village Green Restaurant's new owner offering seasonal new American cuisine, an upscale casual ambiance, and personalized service.

Village Green Restaurant has been part of the Ridgewood community for some decades, and has been known for their many tasting menus and lack of an à la carte dinner menu option. Those who haven’t dined at the restaurant in the past few months may not be aware of a recent change that has taken place – new ownership and a fresh approach to providing guests with a quality dining experience. Kevin Portscher, an ambitious 29-year-old graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, took ownership of Village Green Restaurant two months ago to pursue his passion of providing Ridgewood with modern American cuisine and top service. Portscher has been quick to make changes in his brief tenure, notably providing his guests with a three-…

At Rocca, Italian Favorites Are Reborn With A New Taste For Adventure

The innovative menu at Rocca Italian Restaurant on Rock Road delights patrons

Craig and Stacy Levy settled in Wyckoff because they liked the township, tax rate and schools. But they opened their first restaurant together in Glen Rock.  Craig said they had been working with a Realtor to find restaurant space for Rocca Italian Restaurant, and the spot on Rock Road in Glen Rock "made good business sense." Stacy established that Rocca meant rock in Italian, and it seemed to be an auspicious, short, catchy name, she said. Glen Rock is, after all, famous for its rock. Craig said his first name "historically also means rock, so you put together the two of them and it just seems right." For the uninitiated, Rocca, is pronounced the Italian way: roe-ka, not rock-ah. But however you pronounce it, Rocca has been a success from…

Marra’s: Old Favorite Moving to New Location

Restaurant owners plan to reopen in Ridgewood.

Within the next few months Dorothy and Joe McGuire, proprietors of Marra's restaurant, plan to be bantering with their guests in a new location. A family spokesman said the couple, who took over the decades-old restaurant seven years ago, lost their lease on South Broad Street, but have found a new location and will make an announcement as soon as contracts are signed. "We're closed, but we will be reopening in another location," he said. "We'll let you know." The spokesman said current plans call for a Ridgewood location so the diners who used to pack Marras on Friday and Saturday nights will not have to travel far from the original location. And Dorothy McGuire's meatballs will still be on the menu. Al Marra and his father founded the …

A Mano Demo Offers 'Slice of Naples'

Pizzeria A Mano of Franklin Avenue hosts well known Italian restaurateurs March 6.

In a culinary world increasingly focused on modern and fusion cuisines, a village restaurant exposed patrons to an old world dining experience Saturday. Ridgewood's A Mano held two demonstrations March 6 on the time-tested techniques of classic Neapolitan pizza makers, leaving seminar attendees better educated, and of course, well fed. Saturday's sessions were a celebration Naples's food and history, with A Mano restaurant owner Fred Mortati hosting fourth-generation Italian pizza maker Antonio Starita and, Antonino Esposito, also of Naples.  Mortati, also a food importer with Italian connections, said it was his emotional connection to the food and culture of Naples that drove him to open a pizza restaurant in Ridgewood. "The way this …

A Mano serves the worst pizza I have ever had. The fact that the place was empty should have been a sign of things to come. Appetizers were expensive, but were extremely small portions. The pizzas we ordered were soggy and undercooked, despite each having a nearly $20 price tag. For two appetizers (meatballs-3 of them, and a "sampler" of one croquette, one rice ball type piece, two stuffed …   more ›
