Third Time No Charm For Ridgewood Softball

The Maroons are 0-3 on the season against Paramus after falling 9-1 in a battle for the Big North Freedom crown

PARAMUS— The Spartans have been getting it done at the right time this week, and that time seems to be the sixth inning. Tuesday, it was an RBI double by shortstop Kristina Meier to give Paramus a 3-2 win over Bergenfield in the first round of the North 1, Group 3 state tournament. On Thursday, Paramus broke a scoreless tie by getting five hits and driving in four runs in the frame to beat Montville 4-0 in the second round of the tourney. Saturday—senior day and the final regular season game of the season—the Spartans racked up six hits and added five more runs to earn the Big North Freedom crown with a 9-1 win over neighboring Ridgewood. “Maybe it’s just that we’re getting around in the order a few times,” Paramus head coach Brian Hay …

Slugging Spartans Beat Ridgewood for League Title

Paramus High School baseball blanked Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD—Maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was the circumstances. Whatever the case, the Paramus bats came alive, as the Spartans won the league title by defeating neighboring Ridgewood 14-0 in five innings on a hot and sunny Wednesday afternoon at Veteran’s Field. “Our game is hitting,” said Paramus third baseman Nick Henriquez, who had two RBI on the afternoon. “If we don’t hit, we don’t win.” The Spartans (21-4) racked up a season high 15 hits—off of three Ridgewood pitchers—and scored in every inning. Paramus spotted starter Frank Colasante (7-2) a four-run lead in the first. The Spartans pulled off two double steals in the inning, and first baseman Tony Billera drove in two runs with a single to right.  Billera, who delivered a walk…

Piece of Cake: Nine Top Athletes Honored

Student athletes discuss where they're going to college

For nine Ridgewood students, Wednesday's ceremony honoring them for their athletic accomplishments was a piece of cake. The difficult part was balancing school, sports and many other responsibilities asked of these star student athletes. Matt Beausoleil (The Citadel), Sarah DeVita (University of Virginia), Blair Fuentez (University of Miami), Kaitlin Flood (Delaware), Julia Gould (Holy Cross), InSoo Huang (Brown), Vann Jorgensen (Rutgers), Kayla Polcari (Notre Dame) and Pat Rynkowski (Marist) took photographs signing their letters of intent to college alongside RHS principal Jack Lorenz, as well as their coaches and parents. Of course, each athlete was given a personalized cake featuring an action photo on it. Beausoleil, Huang and …

Early Struggles Continue for RHS Softball Team

The Maroons fall to rival Paramus 9-0 after setback to Immaculate Heart on Tuesday.

The Ridgewood girls varsity softball team continued its early season struggles by falling to neighboring Paramus 9-0 on Friday in a Freedom Division matchup. It's not exactly as the preseason darlings of North Jersey envisioned the season starting. Pitcher Nicole Hroncich (2-4) allowed eight hits, walked five, and struck out three. Ridgewood (2-5) managed five hits–all singles–against Paramus’ Tori Feorenzo (5-1), but could not come up with any clutch hits once runners were on base. Feorenzo struck out six Maroons. The Spartans took a 3-0 lead after three innings and used a five-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Paramus (7-1) avenged last year’s loss to the Maroons.  Spartan first baseman Victoria Vergona took Hroncich yard in…

Girls Lax: 'Absolutely Amazing' State Title

Girl lacrosse defeated West Morris of Mendham 7-6 to capture State Championship.

NEW BRUNSWICK—Neil Armstrong, Christopher Columbus and Amelia Earhart are all known for being pioneers in their respected fields. They defied the odds to achieve what nobody had ever done before and in doing so etched their names in to the history books to be remembered forever and ever. Joining the list of the all time greats is the 2010 Ridgewood girls lacrosse team, which won the schools first-ever women's state championship after defeating West Morris of Mendham 7-6.   "This is something we've been working toward the entire season," said head coach Karla Mixon, who had just been doused by the victorious Gatorade bath. "I couldn't be more proud of the effort the girls have given me not just today but since the very first day of practice…

Wood Girls LAX Advances to State Championship

The Maroons defeated Oak Knoll 19-8 in the Tournament of Champions Final Four.

MENDHAM—A few months ago Ridgewood's head coach Karla Mixon was asked if this year's girls lacrosse team was the best she's had during her tenure. Mixon replied cautiously saying, "They certainly have the potential to be great," before adding, "We have the experience, the skill and the tenacity to be a really solid team, but we haven't won anything yet, so we'll just have to wait and see." The 2010 Ridgewood girls lacrosse team already put that debate to bed by winning the school's first ever Group 4 title a week ago, but it now seems intent on adding an explanation point. On Wednesday the Maroons defeated Oak Knoll 19-8 in the tournament of champion's semifinals to advance the state championship where they will face West Morris of Mendham…

GIRLS LAX STATE GROUP 4 CHAMPS

Masterful Maroons manhandle Cherokee.

ROBBINSVILLE—A little momentum can go a long way. All the way to a Group 4 title, for instance. Fueled by a ceaseless offensive attack, Ridgewood bested Cherokee 21-8 in a decidedly one-sided game, allowing the Maroons to capture the state title at Robbinsville High School, Mercer County. The Maroons were lead by Kelci Smesko and Samantha Cermack. Smesko logged six goals and three assists, while Cermack added three goals and seven assists, putting her mark on many of Ridgewood's points. Samantha Giordano and Sally Jentis also aided the Maroons, scoring five and four goals, respectively. "We knew they were going to be a good team," Smesko said. "Our key was settling on the attack. We ran through our plays and didn't force anything." While …

Tennis Drops Tight Title Game to Livingston

Maroons come up short in 3-2 loss to Lancers.

MONTCLAIR—Ridgewood tennis knew every edge counted in its sectional title bout verse Livingston. Fighting to the last match, the Maroons came up a little short and dropped the game to the Lancers 3-2. Coming into the tournament as defending champions and losers of only one game all year, Ridgewood was primed for a No. 1 seed—and the subsequent home-field advantage. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association thought differently, and Livingston earned the top spot. In the early rounds, both teams easily dispatched its foes. For the title match, the Maroons had to travel to Nishuane Park in Montclair, instead of playing on East Ridgewood Avenue. Lancer sophomore Thomas Caputo overcame a pinched nerve and a torn cervical cord in…

Softball: Three-run Montclair Seventh Knocks Out Ridgewood

Maroons drop state sectional semifinal 6-5.

MONTCLAIR—The Ridgewood softball team's hopes for a trip to its third straight sectional final were dashed when Montclair scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh en route to a 6-5 NJSIAA North 1, Group 4 State semifinal win Tuesday at Fortunato Field. The third-seeded Maroons (24-6) held leads of 4-0 and 5-3, but the second-seeded Mounties used a three-run fifth inning before their two-out, game-winning rally ended Ridgewood's season in heartbreaking fashion. "It's a shame when it ends like that, but we had a great season and I'll tell my kids exactly that and that they should be proud of themselves," Maroon head coach Patti Auger said. "This is a team that had eight starters graduate last season, and we were still one inning away …

Ridgewood's Rally Seals State Sectional Title

The girls lacrosse team defeated previously undefeated Bridgewater-Raritan, 16-15, to capture the Group IV Title.

The Ridgewood girls lacrosse team captured a state sectional title for the second time in as many years after defeating Bridgewater-Raritan 16-15. It was a championship game that actually lived up to its hype as the top-seeded Maroons came back from a four-goal deficit before finally taking the lead for good off a spectacular Samantha Cermack shot. "All of us had so much adrenaline that I don't think there was any way we were going to loose the game," said Cermack, who had three goals and six assists to help carry the Maroons. The game featured seven ties and eight lead changes and was close throughout the first half, but in the second, Bridgewater appeared headed to a title. First, Lauren Sbrilli put the Panthers up 12-8 with a wicked …
