Award-Winning Hawes Elementary Teacher 'Unexpectedly Dies'

Shirley Kolkebeck was an educational specialist at the Ridgewood elementary school.

A respected Ridgewood school teacher unexpectedly died last week, school board president Sheila Brogan announced at Monday night's board meeting. Shirley Kolkebeck, 60, of Harrington Park, was an educational specialist at Hawes Elementary School. She was hired in Ridgewood in 1992 as a kindergarten teacher. She taught a combination of traditional elementary school classes and more specialized groups during her 20-plus year tenure. "Shirley was a very well-liked and respected staff member of the Hawes community," Brogan said. In 2011, Kolkebeck received the Hawes Elementary School teacher recognition award. The board held a moment of silence in Kolkebeck's memory Monday night. She leaves behind her husband, two sons and five grandchildren.
