Food Donations Needed For Thanksgiving & Hurricane Sandy

Local food pantries struggling to keep up with the demand this holiday season.

For food pantries across Northern New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy dealt a double blow: It increased the number of families in need of assistance and shortened the span between Halloween (which Gov. Chris Christie moved to Nov. 5) and Thankgsiving, which comes early this year. Prior to the storm, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey reported more than 960,000 residents of Northern New Jersey are food insecure, meaning at times they lack access to enough food to maintain an active, healthy life.  The Community Food Bank is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9am to 2pm at the following locations in Bergen County:  The Center For Food Action is also collecting food to feed people in our community at the …

It’s crunch time at Ridgewood Social Services as they get ready to support their clients during the holiday season. But as Thanksgiving draws near, their pantry—which is usually well-stocked this time of year—has many empty shelves. The Social Service Association covers Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Waldwick, Wyckoff, Midland Park, and Ho-Ho-Kus. As always, they’ve been at work since October anticipating the needs of the families they serve. And how are they doing? “That remains to be seen,” says Denise Vollkommer. She points to economic conditions since 2009 that have both expanded the population they serve and narrowed the number of those able to donate. All Hands On Deck for Thanksgiving Eve

Ridgewood's bars, pizza restaurants prepare for one of the busiest night of the year with extra staff, bouncers.

On the night before Thanksgiving, the command from owners of bars and pizza restaurants is consistent: all hands on deck. Thanksgiving is a time of abundance, and Thanksgiving eve is no exception. It's one of the busiest night of the year for bars and take-out restaurants—with bars flooded with college students returning home, and take-out restaurants flooded with orders for cheap, easy food. Ridgewood business owners said that, despite worries about how the economy will affect what is supposed to be a peak performance night, they were still expecting one of the year's strongest days for sales. “The whole year’s been up and down like a yo-yo. But it’s going to be better than a normal Wednesday night, that’s for sure,” said Carl Davies, …
