Poll: Dig the Design of 'Dayton' Housing Project?

The proposed 106-unit luxury apartment complex on South Broad Street have been "de-massed" to appear as two buildings joined at the center.

With a series of staggered peaks towering above 106 high-end apartments set behind the Ridgewood rail line, sketches of the Tudor-style housing proposal "The Dayton" on South Broad Street elicit a range of opinions. Scott Loventhal, of developer Garden Homes, says major revisions have "de-massed" the proposed five-story luxury apartment building on the land that had previously been Brogan Cadillac. Garden Homes is appealing for the property to be re-zoned to allow for residential uses; and it's just one of several properties being studied by Ridgewood to assess if zone changes to allow for residential housing downtown should be sought, and if so, what regulations should be in place. The purchase of a small adjoining property has helped …

This is NOT beautiful architecture. In my humble opinion, it is not attractive ... does not look sunny and charming. To me it looks dark and dreary. I'm all for innovation, growth and changing with the times. Some towns seem to be bursting with new businesses like Westwood and Ramsey... we need to bring Ridgewood back to the top, attracting new businesses and customers. This design is awful.... …   more ›

Downtown Housing Developments Could Finish by 2014

A summer of 2014 construction target for two large multi-family housing projects an "optimistic" estimate, Village Planner says.

Pressed by a resident over believed lack of progress on large multi-family housing proposals in the downtown, Village Planner Blais Brancheau said bricks might be laid in spring of 2013 and finished by summer of 2014 if things go exceedingly well. Developers for a 120-unit "luxury" proposal on S. Broad St. and a 62-unit complex on Chestnut St. appealed to the planning board in 2011 to request a zone change to the Master Plan. The process funneled into a comprehensive study of housing stock and the overall approprirateness of multi-family housing downtown. But Paul Levin, of Graydon Terrace, was anxious to find out when ground could break. It would largely determine whether he stayed in Ridgewood or not, he said. "My frustration is this has…

Wow. I'm gobsmacked that any Ridgewood resident would want a high density, multi-family apartment complex built in their otherwise nice downtown. Let me recap: adding 172 new units could add potentially 200 to 300 new kids into the school system (if each unit averages 1 or 2 kids), create traffic snafus, overcrowding, burden your police/fire, and further screw up your bad parking situation. And …   more ›

Developer Hopes Luxury Apartments Will Replace Brogan Cadillac Lot

Developer proposes 120-unit luxury complex to replace Brogan Cadillac lot; planning board has questions on a myriad of preliminary details

A real estate company says a proposed 120-unit luxury housing development on South Broad Street could pay big dividends for the village, and it unveiled initial plans to the Ridgewood Planning Board on Tuesday night. Professionals from Garden Homes, based out of Short Hills, NJ, offered up for consideration a 42,570 foot "reverse E"-shaped facility with 120 units and 180 parking spaces at the site of Brogan Cadillac on South Broad Street. A proposed three and four story high project with parking enclosed on site, "The Dayton"–named in memory of one of Ridgewood's founding fathers, Samuel Dayton–would need to go through a battery of zoning processes, including a Master Plan amendment with planning board and council approval, before …

I am very hopeful that these apartments will be built. My family just sold our home. The home we were supposed to by fell through because the owner can't find a home. Now, we have no place to go except for an apartment while we keep looking. Except for the Winthrop Manor apartments, the other apartments are disgusting! It would be great for people to have a place to live while they're in …   more ›
