Frank DelVecchio Running From Village to Ground Zero to Benefit Families of 9/11 Victims

To ensure the lives of those lost in the tragic attacks of 9/11 are not forgotten, Frank DelVecchio is challenging himself. He'll be running from his native Ridgewood to what was once simply known as "Ground Zero," with an eye toward raising funds to benefit still-grieving families.

The Fairview police chief and long-time village resident will be departing from the Ridgewood Duck Pond at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, cutting through Bergen County and Henry Hudson Parkway to Ground Zero, a grueling 25 miles.

DelVecchio's ambitious run – much further than he's ever run before – will benefit charity Tuesday's Children.

"This is a charity that is supported by many because they provide so much to victim’s families," DelVecchio said. "Times are tough for so many, but this charity is worth it. Their cause is our cause, to ensure the memory of the victims of 9/11 will live on, by helping their loved ones overcome, if that is ever possible, the loss they have suffered."

The anniversary of the Al Quaeda attacks holds a special significance for DelVecchio. He and members of his department spent five days in the rubble following the collapse, aiding in the rescue and recovery effort.

"I know several people who lost family member, some from Ridgewood and others from Fairview where I work," DelVecchio said. 

in the attacks.

"During that time period such a tragedy united a country and on the 11th anniversary, we want to send a message that no one should ever forget that day," he remarked. "Part of doing this run is to have people support an organization that helps others who lost a loved one that day."

DelVecchio hopes to raise $10,000 for his run, with the entirety of funds raised benefiting the charity.
