Student Arrested After Allegedly Making Gun Threat Against Ridgewood High School

Officials say the 'non-credible' threat against the school was made using the Yik Yak anonymous posting app.

Police have arrested a 17-year-old Ridgewood High School student that they say made an online threat to bring a gun to school, NorthJersey.com reported. He has been charged with third degree terroristic threats, the report said.

According to a release from Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward, there is "no current threat" against the school or students.

Police say a parent alerted them to a threatening online post, which prompted a joint investigation between the PD and school district.

According to a letter to parents from Superintendent Daniel Fishbein, the gun threat was posted to the Yik Yak App, which allows for anonymous community message board-type posts. In an updated letter Wednesday afternoon, Fishbein said the PD deemed the threat not credible.

Though Fishbein did not comment on the nature of the threat, he did say that the Ridgewood Police worked through the night with state and federal authorities, as well as officials from Yik Yak to identify the IP address and GPS location of the poster.

He said the post was treated as a "serious threat."

Fishbein also released a letter warning parents about the prevalence of the App among high school students, and asked that parents talk to their kids about the potential dangers of the App.
