GR BOE Not in Favor of Armed Security Guards

Agree with the board's sentiment? Disagree?

The Glen Rock Board of Education is moving forward with a plan to hire a "greeter" to perform security duty at the middle school/high school, but don't expect the individual to be armed with a gun.

"I can tell you the sentiment of our board of education is against it," board president Sheldon Hirschberg told Patch Thursday. "Part of it is the police response time to any of our schools – and they really practice this a lot – is within seconds."

Hirschberg said several school board members recently attended a symposium on school safety. Three police chiefs recommended against armed guards in schools, he said.

The board on Monday night approved a job description for the greeter, to be paid $67,000 a year. It did not include any language about weapons.

Administrators and board members have said they are looking to find a candidate with a background in law enforcement.
