AP: Amtrak in Talks to Consider Taking Over Killed Tunnel Project
ARC tunnel project killed last month may be taken over by Amtrak, which was excluded from original plan. Plans as of now are 'exploratory,' officials say.
There may be new life to hopes that the cancelled tunnel from North Jersey to New York may still come to fruition. The Associated Press is reporting that transit giant Amtrak is developing exploratory plans to take over the ARC tunnel, which was cancelled by Governor Christie after concerns over billions of dollars in cost overruns.
The AP report says that a partnership between Amtrak and NJ Transit may have Amtrak add two more tracks to their antiquated lines under the Hudson River. NJ Transit and Amtrak officials both reported that all plans are "more exploratory than preliminary," and a spokesperson from NJ Transit said they're "always talking to them about better ways to make use of the infrastructure to benefit New Jersey."
The federal government has also told the state that they expect a check for $271 million after contributing $3 billion to the cancelled project, the AP reported in a separate article.

Thanks, for posting and for the connecting links to AP separate stories. A federal demand for #271 Million to be returned by New Jersey should get everyone's attention.

Ridgewood certainly would stand to benefit from one seat service into manhattan, I was sad to see this project get scuttled. I'm not sure if the NJTransit plans will fit Amtraks requirements for full high speed rail service, but it would seem on the surface to be a great fit to just use the same plans and save on the extra engineering and environmental studies.
