Glen Rock Parents Have No Stomach for 'Substandard' Lunch Program

Better, more expensive meals for elementary school students may be coming to the district following complaints.

Glen Rock school officials will be exploring more robust lunch offerings to elementary school students following complaints from a parent Monday night, according to a report in the Glen Rock Gazette.

Leslie Schraer, a Byrd School parent, told the board that food provider Pomptonian's offerings were too meager to fuel elementary school children, particularly at $2.75 per meal, according to the report. Parents would pay more for better quality and quantity meals, like the ones available for teachers, she told the board.

"I have not spent a dime on lunch since Pomptonian has been here, and I used to purchase lunch at least three times a week" the report quoted Trustee Elizabeth Carr as saying. She called the meals "cold, soggy, and for lack of a better word, just substandard."

School officials said they'd look into better meals for the students for the upcoming school year.

The elementary schools in Glen Rock do not have cafeterias. In a recent parent survey, only 20 percent of 222 elementary school parents found the lunch quality had improved since Pomptonian took over in 2009.
