More Parking for Teachers, Less for RHS Students?

The Ridgewood Village Council on Wednesday will be discussing a request by the school district to require that Heermance Pl. be open to only those with parking permits, effectively booting students from spots during the day and giving teachers relief.

Village Manager Ken Gabbert, in an e-mail Tuesday, said the village is considering having parking on the street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. permissable only by permit, which the school district would issue.

"This is one outcome," Gabbert said. "We are only looking for solutions that will have minimal impact on neighboring areas."

Ridgewood Public Schools Superintendent Daniel Fishbein said the amount of spaces available for teachers is "very tight" and the district is looking to place ten vehicles on the small side street. Asked if ten spots designated for teachers would be enough to alleviate the parking problems for staff, Fishbein said: "We feel that should do it."

If such a change happens, it's certain to be somber news for students. Most students now pick from a few less-than-ideal options, like paying big bucks to park at a or trudging over from the Graydon parking lot.

The council work session begins at 7:30 p.m. in Village Hall.
