Are Magazines Art?

Art is everywhere around us; sometimes in obvious places; sometimes in those a bit more obscure. This thought comes to mind as I flip through a glossy magazine, pages filled with beautiful summer clothing and accessories.

Most of us don’t think about the artistic talents needed to create that standout image. Thanks to programs like “Project Runway,” many of us have a glimpse into the creative process that goes into designing a garment, but there is so much more.

At its essence the garment depends on the art of its fabric – its material and its print. One of my close friends designs prints for fabrics. She spends hours researching color trends, creating patterns, and drawing animals or shapes. Once her work is finished and the fabric is made, a garment is fashioned.

A beautiful piece of clothing isn’t enough to create the image in the magazine. More artists are involved. There is the creative director who oversees the photo shoot. Think of the photographer who selects the right camera lens, the perfect angle, and the lighting. Consider the graphic designer who lays out the image on the page. All of these professionals work together to insure the finished product is something readers will notice, and in the case of retail, purchase.

When you get frustrated that the photos you take from your phone, or the brochure or website you create for your company, don’t look like professional, remember the artists who are behind the scenes.
