Food Trend Watch: Cake Pops Hit Ridgewood

Ridgewood resident Luana Woods serves up indulgent cake pops

The past few years have seen many dessert trends come and go. Cupcakes, pies, and most recently French macaroons have swept through pastry shops and each gained dedicated followings across America.

The hottest newcomer in this field is cake pops – rolled balls of crumbled cake and frosting that are, coated, decorated with toppings, and served on a stick like their lollipop cousins. Simple, indulgent, and easy to enjoy at any occasion or just as a snack, these treats have found their way to the Ridgewood food scene through Luana Woods, owner of Cakepops for You.

Woods first fell in love with cake pops two Easters ago when her sister-in-law brought over adorable chick cake pops, but never dreamed she would be able to make them herself until the following Easter came along. She made her first cake pops and knew immediately that she found her passion. Since then, she has been baking, rolling, and decorating her way to success. What makes her pops unique is her care and attention to detail – Woods hand-makes every single pop and bakes every batch to order. Making cake pops can be a time consuming task, but she enjoys every minute of it and puts a lot of love and passion into each and every pop.

Since opening, Luana’s business has taken off. Her promotions on Groupon and Suburban Momma were big winners – on Groupon alone, she sold close to 600 dozen cake pops in one day. Word has spread quickly, and orders have started pouring in from places like Summit and Linden.

Woods offers three cake pop categories: the simple cake pops, which are either chocolate or vanilla cake, dipped in either milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate; the signature collection includes classic flavor combinations like red velvet cake, strawberry shortcake, and carrot cake; and finally a custom collection where customers create their own pops for special occasions. Individual pops start at $2.50 while a dozen starts at $23.95. These delightful pops can be found at the following locations:
