Adopting a dog this weekend? Here are some helpful tips...

On Sunday one of the largest adoption events ever is coming to the Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital as owners seek out their new best friend. Here are some tips on selecting your new dog and getting off on the right paw.

Do your homework and become familiar with the various breeds and discuss with your family members prior to adoption day, what your preferences are. Do you want a high energy youngster or a mellow couch-loving senior? Shedding or non-shedding? And by knowing breed characteristics you can anticipate some of the traits your dog may have such as loving water and retrieving, sniffing out varmints  or herding your kids. And most importantly, who will be responsible for housebreaking? Yes, even adult dogs may be disoriented in their new environment and need help settling in.

Contact a trainer right away to teach your dog basic manners and listen to all family members. At Canines Can Do we teach your dog to listen to all family members, respect boundaries and become a pleasure to be around, walking nicely on leash and not lungeing at others. Jumping and mouthing is a common problem and best handled with early intervention.

Prior to arriving home make a checklist of what your dog will need and discuss with the adoption contact. What has the dog been fed? Any allergies? Does the dog sleep in a crate? If a puppy plan on purchasing the traditional bell-shaped Kong and other appropriate chew toys. And if adding a second dog be sure to introduce them in a neutral setting with the help of a professional.

Adopting a new pet is an exciting and rewarding experience. And it is made even better through planning, patience helping your new family member adjust, training kindly and loving them unconditionally forever.
