Bergen County's Executive, Sheriff Disagree On Aquiring Armored Vehicles

The Bergen County Sheriff has requested two MRAP military vehicles from the federal government, which has been met with opposition from the County Executive, Kathleen Donovan.

Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino's request from the Federal Government's U.S. Department of Defense for two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles has been met with opposition from Bergen County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan.

The military vehicles, known as MRAPs, are encased in thick steel that shields soldiers inside from roadside explosives, and are being donated from the military under a program that makes the surplus vehicles and other supplies available to law enforcement for free.

Donovan has requested the Freeholder Board to block the resolution that endorses Saudino’s plans, criticizing the fact that the MRAPs are combat vehicles, and unnecessary for the streets of Bergen County. She also raised concerns regarding insurance, repair costs, and safety.

Sheriff Saudino has argued that the vehicles will serve many purposes, including being used by the regional SWAT team, "executing high-risk warrants and transporting high-risk prisoners", as well as "high-water rescues".
