Car Strikes Fire Hydrant After Motor Vehicle Accident

One woman was taken to the hospital after the Thursday afternoon collision, according to police.

A woman was taken to Valley Hospital for precautionary reasons after she was struck by a vehicle that led to her crashing into a fire hydrant Thursday afternoon.

According to Ridgewood Police Sgt. Glenn Ender, the driver of a Honda Accord was traveling west on Grove Street when another female driver attempted to cross Grove Street from South Van Dien Avenue and the vehicles collided. After the initial collision, the Honda Accord's front end slammed into the fire hydrant.

She did not appear injured in the collision but was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons as she recently had surgery, he said.

The driver of the white Toyota Highlander was issued a citation for failure to stop or yield at an intersection. She was not injured in the accident and her vehicle sustained minor front-end damage.

Ridgewood Water personnel were on scene to repair the hydrant. The Honda Accord was towed from the scene.

Sgt. Glenn Ender spoke to the fire hydrant after the initial impact to check it's condition...reported as "stable" and it was overheard that the fire hydrant "never saw it coming" due to it's natural low profile. Ridgewood water "tightened er up" and the fire hydrant returned to duty as of 7:00PM EST.

I use to drop the kids off at school and then head into NYC. I experienced the mom's in the mini vans at the school dropoff, the cars racing to get to work on Route 4 and the cabs in midtown. Clearly the most frightening experience were the mom's in the mini vans...outta my way man!

Its just amazing how these fire hydrants take for granted that cars will stop and just step out in front of them without even looking. I know the cars are supposed to stop and all, but fire hydrants please exercise some caution. Some of the fire hydrants in Ridgewood have real chutzpah these days.

I'll add to that that I don't feel sorry for that fire hydrant at all. Exercise some personal responsibility fire hydrants!

I think that men on cell phones are the worst because they think that the workd should defer to them. I drove behind one the other day - he used his hands when he talked as if someone could see him. With one hand holding the phone and the other gesturing quite often there was little focus on steering or on the merging panes ahead. Another "master of the universe".
