Driver Strikes Pedestrian, Flees Scene

Incident occurred on S. Broad St. Sunday afternoon.

Ridgewood police are searching for an SUV driver who struck a woman crossing S. Broad St. and fled the scene early Sunday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Brian Pullman, a female pedestrian was walking north on S. Broad St. when a woman driving a silver or grey SUV turned left onto Leroy Pl. and hit the pedestrian.

The victim told Patch she put her hands out to stop the vehicle and did a "ninja flip," landing on her side.

She sustained minor injuries to the wrist and knee. She declined to be transported to the hospital, Pullman said.

The driver took off after a brief exchange in which she inquired about the victim's injuries, Pullman said.

"It was clearly a hit and run," the victim said.

Police will continue to search for the driver's whereabouts.

I hope they catch the driver soon and that she gets more than a slap on the wrist.

Hope the victim is ok

No harm, no foul. The driver stopped, spoke with the pedestrian and left. The pedestrian refused medical treatment so it't likely not more than a scrape.
James Kleimann January 06, 2013 at 07:57 PM
My understanding is the driver asked, "Are you OK?" to which the victim said something to the effect of, "No, you hit me with your car" and the driver fled. One way or another, if you strike someone with your vehicle you're supposed to wait for the police.

Correct James. Regardless of the victim refusing medical treatment, it is illegal to flee the scene of an accident. Penalties are worse when there is a pedestrian involved. Cannot wait to hear the bs the driver gives as an excuse.

I'm sure that the license plate is on the tapes of several video cameras that operate in the area.
George Zullo Millington January 06, 2013 at 10:26 PM
Was the victim able to to get the license plate #? Model and make of the vehicle? Description of the driver? Several times when crossing Linwood Ave. from Graydon side to Vet's Field or the reverse, I have been almost mowed down by fast-driving fools who seem to be in a stupor. The whole Ridgewood area is quite dangerous for pedestrians. I constantly see soccer moms driving while checking their smart phones or talking on them. Sorry ladies, but when I'm walking during the daytime, that's what I see on a frequent basis. Driving a huge car/truck with one hand on the wheel and the phone in the other is a recipe for really hurting someone.

If memory serves me, didn't Mr. Bolger offer to pay for a video camera system for the CBD a few years back? Would've come in handy in this case... Come to think of it, it would've come in handy for dozens of pedestrian strikes and countless near misses over that time.

GZM: "soccer moms" Hey! :) I agree with you that many drivers need to slow down and be more careful.

Speeding, careless, reckless driving seem to be the new normal in the village with a do nothing police force.

I want GPS locating microchips in everyone, so that if there is ever a crime, we will know the location of everyone at the time of a crime.

Crossing any street in Ridgewood is taking your life in your hands. This is especially true for the marked crossing from the library to the shopping centre.

Raul That's called a cell phone
Phil Brooks January 07, 2013 at 06:50 PM
I will stop for anyone in a crosswalk. But some of you folks crossing the street have to look around and otherwise acknowledge your surroundings. Too many of you walk across the street playing with your cell phones or otherwise without a care in the world. And, sometimes, when you walk out in front of a parked car or the visibility is not as clear as it should be, I won't see you until the last second. So, yes, you have the right to expect people to stop for you. But look around a little bit, OK? Maybe even wave or something.

Leroy is a deadend. I think the story maybe miss written. "...when a woman driving a silver or grey SUV turned left onto Leroy Pl..." there is about 4-5 houses and a NYSC parking lot.
James Kleimann January 07, 2013 at 10:31 PM
Leroy Place is indeed a dead end; that doesn't mean the story was "miswritten." Most likely, the driver was attempting to turn into the gym parking lot.

I know the Ninja Pedestrian from twitter. She isn't just a ninja, she is a Kung Fu warrior. I'm surprised she didn't back flip over the hood while simultaneously doing a split, backward roundhouse kick all while fanning herself with a steel fan. We call her Po and she is part of twitter's little known Furious Five. Love you Po and glad to hear you survived the Tai Lung driver.

James, My fault I commented and then remembered they had left the scene. Brain laps... it was Monday

"Driver Strikes Pedestrian, Flees Scene". Did the driver herself strike the pedestrian, or did the SUV strike her? We needs to know!

If only I could be a ninja, I would walk the Ridgewood streets at night jumping in front of cars while on my cell phone listening to my ipod music and texting without ever getting hit by a car. If the Ninja flip class is at the nyc sp club, I am in!!!
AC Willment January 09, 2013 at 09:00 PM
I don't have a cell and I always look both ways, then look again. Drivers sail past, oblivious.
