Dump Truck Spills Fuel Into Ridgewood Storm Drain

Incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Monroe and Godwin.

At least 30 gallons of diesel fuel slipped into a storm drain near the intersection of Monroe and Godwin Avenue late Tuesday morning before officials soaked it up.

Ridgewood Fire Department Lt. John Albano said a dump truck belonging to contractor Lotona & Son suffered a puncture to its driver side fuel tank at about 11:30 a.m. Firefighters responded four minutes later, he said, and workers extracted 30 gallons of fuel from the storm drain with a large suction pump.

It's unclear exactly how much fuel entered into the storm drain system or why the puncture occurred.

Responders said the fuel traveled south to Spencer Pl. Absorbant cotton pads and Speedy Dry were used to soak the fuel, Albano said.

The fuel spill will not impact the drinking water, the lieutenant said.
