Fugitive Caught, Quickly Back on Streets

Dereck Miller, 34, was on the run for more than a month on burglary charges before being caught. He's already back out on bail, police said.

An alleged thief who has been on the run for more than a month was arrested Friday morning and back out on the streets hours later, according to Ridgewood police.

Dereck Miller, 34, was first wanted by Ridgewood police for allegedly stealing jewelry from a home on South Broad Street in August. With warrants out for his arrest, Miller fled.

On Friday, at 10:30 a.m., Detective Doug Williams found Miller at the bus stop in front of Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. He was arrested for the outstanding warrant on the charges of burglary and theft.

Miller, who has a lengthy rap sheet for petty crimes dating back nearly 15 years, didn't stay in county jail for long. His grandfather quickly posted 10 percent on his $25,000 bond and Miller was freed, Ridgewood police said.

Additional charges are expected, according to police.
