Employee Accused of Stealing $40K From Ridgewood…

Fugitive Caught, Quickly Back on Streets

Dereck Miller, 34, was on the run for more than a month on burglary charges before being caught. He's already back out on bail, police said.

An alleged thief who has been on the run for more than a month was arrested Friday morning and back out on the streets hours later, according to Ridgewood police.

Dereck Miller, 34, was first wanted by Ridgewood police for allegedly stealing jewelry from a home on South Broad Street in August. With warrants out for his arrest, Miller fled.

On Friday, at 10:30 a.m., Detective Doug Williams found Miller at the bus stop in front of Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. He was arrested for the outstanding warrant on the charges of burglary and theft.

Miller, who has a lengthy rap sheet for petty crimes dating back nearly 15 years, didn't stay in county jail for long. His grandfather quickly posted 10 percent on his $25,000 bond and Miller was freed, Ridgewood police said.

Additional charges are expected, according to police.

10% bail for a criminal that has a record for crime going back 15 years is dumb. Maybe next time he will break into a home where the owner is home with a gun.

this kid has been trouble since he was 18 and always in trouble with the ridgewood police. he needs to be in jail and off the streets, one day we should hope that he does a crime where the owner of the house has a gun and takes care of this criminal. anyone in ridgewood that knows the name and knows what a low life piece of trash this kid is

Been on the run for a month??? Why was the bail only set at $25,000?
westwood kid October 24, 2012 at 11:56 AM
this kid belongs in jail where he cant commit more crimes and make the police chase him wasteing there time and the tax payer money. the police have much better things to do in town like catch this nut who has been trying to pick up kids.

His grandfather posted bail why not the parents? Do they realize there is a serious problem?
Flygrl October 24, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Unbelievable...once again. Do we have to wait for worse things to happen? Two police were shot in Long Island just recently with same situation of someone out on parole. Why can we not protect our homes, families & even police better!

I've requested a booking photo from the Sheriff's Department. When I receive it, I'll post it.

James: You seriously need to think twice about posting a picture of someone only accused of a crime, and where people on this site are advocating his death. If somebody stupid, does something stupid, you will have had a hand in it.

I think there are more than just accusations involved here, "Miller, who has a lengthy rap sheet for petty crimes dating back nearly 15 years..." and such photos are likely available to the public anyway. I think it's a good idea for people to be able to ID this guy if he's hanging out in front of someone's house.

He's been convicted of other crimes in the past. And no, the journalist is not responsible for his facts making someone angry.
