NJ Transit Bus Strikes Signal Pole on Maple at Ackerman

A bus collided with a traffic signal on Maple Avenue just before children were released from school on Tuesday afternoon.

The NJ transit bus struck the pole while traveling north east on Maple Avenue just before crossing the intersection at Ackerman Avenue. 

Glen Rock Police Officers on the scene would not comment on the mid-day collision, but a witness on the scene shortly after the accident did not see any injured individuals and Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps did not appear at the highly trafficked intersection.

Following the accident police directed traffic and escorted children walking home from school around the pole, which was suspended by its own devices at an angle above the street.

A crossing guard on the scene said he arrived at his post on Ackerman and Maple avenues at about 3:15 p.m., after the collision occurred. He said children usually leave local schools at 3:15 or 3:20 p.m.

Car traffic driving in both directions on Maple Avenue was backed up, though not extensively.

At approximately 3:35 p.m. a crew was on the scene raising the damaged pole, which did not appear to be compromising the utility wires above.

The NJ Transit bus that hit the traffic signal appeared to have taken no visible damage to its exterior, and cleared the scene at approximately 3:20 p.m.

The driver of the bus spoke with Glen Rock Police before driving the bus from the scene.

It is unclear if any passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash or if police wrote any citations related to the accident.
