RHS Student Slashed in Attempted Robbery, Police Say

Ridgewood police seeking information on assault that caused minor injuries to juvenile high school student.

A Ridgewood High student was assaulted with a knife during an attempted robbery on his return to school from lunch Wednesday, according to village police.

The student was brought to Valley Hospital for treatment of minor injuries from the assault, which was reported to police by school staff upon his return to the building at 11:45 a.m.

The juvenile victim told police that he noticed an unknown man, who he described as white, in his twenties with slightly scruffy facial hair, and wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and black sweatpants, following him on Walthery Avenue Wednesday morning.

Police say the assailant attempted to steal the juvenile’s backpack, pulling him down in the process.

The suspect pulled out a knife and “started slashing at the juvenile” after he fell to the ground, police said in a statement.

The juvenile broke free and ran home, later returning to school to report the attack, according to police.

Checks of the area did not turn up a suspect, but additional patrols were to continue in the area in an effort to track down the assailant, police said.
