Ridgewood to Lift Limit on Number of Police Officers

If a new ordinance is passed, the current 30-officer limit will be eliminated, and two stalled hires will likely join the squad.

About a month after two new police department hires were put on hold, Ridgewood officials will likely move forward on a law eliminating the cap on the number of police officers allowed in the village, NorthJersey.com reported.

The village council introduced an ordinance last week that would remove the current 30-officer limit, the report said. The move would likely allow for the official hire of two officers who were offered positions in January, but temporarily denied the jobs because of the limit, it said.

The delay in the hiring has already caused the duo to miss attending the Bergen County Police Academy, which started Jan. 30, the report said. However, if the limitless law is passed, they could likely attend the Essex County Academy, which starts in late March, it said.

The new ordinance also strongly suggests the village re-create the school resource officer position, NorthJersey.com reported.

The ordinance will be considered during a hearing on March 5, the report said.
