Shell Casings Found at RHS

Police say casings are props from student film project

Police say they found numerous ammunition shell casings on the grounds of Ridgewood High School last week but say they're just props from a student film, Chief John Ward said Monday afternoon.

Ward said in an earlier interview that detectives were called to RHS on Tuesday, June 6 and collected several shells. Police said there was no evidence to suggest a gun was discharged on school grounds and authorities believe the shells were brought from an ammunition range as a prop to a student film project.

Detective Chris McDowell said it was not a school-sponsored play but noted no crime was committed.

"That night we contacted school officials and they were made aware of it. We still took the initial steps of putting up marked and unmarked patrols around the schools" as a precautionary measure, Ward said. "We were proactive," the chief added.

"The police and administration took this very seriously and are relieved that the mystery of the origin of the shell casing[s] have been resolved," Superintendent Dr. Daniel Fishbein said via e-mail Monday afternoon.
