A fuel tanker pumping diesel into the tanks of the on East Ridgewood Avenue left a fuel spill onto Ridgewood's main shopping street Wednesday afternoon.
When pulling out from the tank, the truck's relief valve came loose, according to Ridgewood Fire Chief Jim Van Goor. The truck traveled to the intersection of E. Ridgewood and S. Maple Ave., when the driver realized he had been discharging fuel for about 100 yards.
The driver, Van Goor said, estimated about 25 gallons of diesel were discharged onto the streets.
The fuel spill caused one injury, according to Ridgewood Police Sgt. Brian Pullman. One woman slipped on the fuel and sustained a minor injury to her rear end, Pullman said. She refused medical attention.
Traffic bottlenecked at the heavily-traversed thoroughfare Wednesday afternoon. The east-bound lane on E. Ridgewood Ave. was shutdown as was S. Maple from E. Ridgewood Ave. southbound as responders waited for the county HAZMAT unit to arrive.
