Village Wood Chipper Cuts Up Telephone Pole in Freak Accident

Chipper affixed to village truck dislodges and splits a telephone pole, fulfills purpose in life.

A chipper attached to a Village of Ridgewood truck felled a N. Maple Avenue telephone Monday afternoon in a bizarre accident, Ridgewood police said.

According to Ridgewood Police Sgt. Glenn Ender, the village worker was traveling northbound when the chipper's hydraulic boom loosened, unhinged from the vehicle and struck two telephone poles on the east side of the street.

One of the two poles was split in the 3:30 p.m. collision.

N. Maple Avenue was closed off between Mastin Place and Linwood Avenue for nearly 12 hours. PSE&G is expected to have completed replacing the pole by 2 a.m. Tuesday, Ender said.

The chipper sustained minor damage. There were no injuries reported and the driver is not facing traffic charges.
