Wind Topples Massive Tree, Decimating Ridge Rd. Home

Homeowners were not in house when tree fell.

Heavy winds uprooted a tree and sent it slicing through the rear of a family's home on Saturday afternoon.

Police on the scene said that no one was present at the Ridge Road home when the tree — located to the right of the house in the rear yard — was leveled by strong winds and fell across the rear of the house.

"It was like a wicked gust of 5-second wind," neighbor Jeff Schaefer said. "The tree literally cut the house in half.”

The neighbor said the massive tree, which had been taller than the home it crushed, fell at around 12:30 p.m.

Glen Rock Police Department and Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene assessing the damage.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for all of Bergen County earlier today. According to the NWS, winds were expected to reach as fast as 60 mph.

High winds are expected to continue moving through the region until late Saturday, the National Weather Service said. The advisory warned the gusty weather could snap tree limbs and cause power outages.
