Christie Writes Check To State For Helicopter Ride

Reimbursement comes two days after Governor took state police helicopter to son's baseball game in Montvale.

Gov. Chris Christie and the state GOP will reimburse the state for the in Bergen County, the governor said Thursday.

The Republican State Committee paid $1,232.29 for the Tuesday flight, while Christie paid the other half of the $2,465 bill. Christie also paid $919.20 for a flight on Friday. Christie said Thursday that he initially did not feel he needed to reimburse the state, but changed his mind in order to "focus on the really important issues to the people of the State of New Jersey."

"My initial reaction to not reimbursing was I was told there is nothing to reimburse for," Christie said in Denville on Thursday. "Those helicopters are up in the air and required to be up in the air not only for various assignments they have but also because hours are needed to be logged on a regular weekly basis by these pilots in order to keep their certifications."

"There's a bottom line," he continued. "I'm governor 24/7 every single day, but I am also a father and the fact of the matter is that sometimes when you are governor you do not control your schedule. And so if you want to try to do all the things people want you to do as governor, and also be a father and try to make sure you get to as many of the things for your kids that you want to be at, there are times it is literally impossible to do that by car and two of those instances came up in the last week."

Christie faced strong criticism Wednesday for using the state police helicopter to travel to his son's baseball game in Montvale.

As first reported by Patch, Christie landed on a sports field at St. Joseph Regional High School Tuesday afternoon, minutes before his son was about to take the field as the catcher for the Delbarton School in their playoff game against St. Joe's. He and his wife, Mary Pat, left in the helicopter after the 5th inning. The governor then headed to Princeton to meet with a group of Iowa donors who were trying to recruit him to run for president.

State Police Superintendent Rick Fuentes defended the flight on Wednesday, saying the flight hours would have been accumulated anyway on the aircraft, as pilots become accustomed to the new helicopters. The state police oversees security for the governor.

Christie said he tries to balance his responsibilities as governor and as a father.

"With my son, how long you are going to be in the state tournament?  You win you're in, you lose you're out," he said. "We tried to balance me being governor and the demands on that with my responsibility of being a father. And I am also going to balance that as hard as i can toward my responsibilities as a dad, not just because I feel responsible for it, but because I want to."

But he also said he understood that the helicopter ride made for "political theater and media theater that people enjoy at times."

"I also understand that this is a really fun media story for all of you. I get it," Christie said. "And that you like to write about these things and so the fact  is that i have a lot of important work to do. I got a $54 billion pension underfunding I'm tryng to solve, a $67 billion health insurance problem I'm trying to solve and if me writing a check for 2,100 bucks and a $1200 check from the state committee to pay for these two helicopter rides will allow us to to focus on the really important issues to the people of the state of New Jersey then I am willing to do it."

Christie said that he and Mary Pat wrote their check to the state treasury on Thursday.

If you can't afford the taxes then maybe you should consider relocation. If you can't relocate then maybe you should consider running for governor. At least then, if you win, you might be able to catch a ride on a helicopter that has to be in the air anyway.

They are only partly right REA, one can be a socialist and a fascist at the same time. I haven't heard him being called all three at the same time though, usually just socialist.
Bruce Packer June 04, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I'd like to know where I can go to get the helicopter schedule so I can take advantage of the empty seat whenever it is available.
Dr.Doom June 04, 2011 at 03:27 PM
REAmerican - wrong role models. If you are trying to be like Glenn Beck, Michael Moore, Birthers, Swift Boaters, Ann Coulter, Keith Olbermann - congrads.
eyes wide shut June 04, 2011 at 04:32 PM
To Ken F. Just how far away from being Socialist do YOU think WE are? Do you even know what Socialism is? Here let me make it simple so even YOU can understand it. so·cial·ism/ˈsōSHəˌlizəm/ Noun: A political and economic theory of that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole...The community Ken. And WE would be the COMMUNITY...The things that OUR government has run for years, such as, the military, Schools, and hopefully soon healthcare so ALL are covered like MOST other countries including Israel. What YOU genius fail to realize there is a huge difference between Socialism and being communist. Seems YOUR party of NO NO NO are the ones acting like the communists now. Social Security, Medicare, Medicade have always been run by OUR Government and it seems YOUR party is trying to take that away so they can subsidize the BIG Oil Companies....Come next election lets see who YOUR party puts forth to run and if they will NOW back away from killing these things that makes us socialists...
REAmerican June 04, 2011 at 11:28 PM
Ken F. - Really? A socialist and a fascist at the same time? Please explain how that is possible if you wouldn't mind. Punkin are you insane? I'm not a republican so I can never be like Beck, Birthers, Swift Boaters and Ann Coulter, those folks are all liars and ignorant, unAmerican faux patriots. I AM more like Michael Moore and Keith Olbermann because I try to learn and educate myself to the truth, which is something you should try and do. You are more like the 1st four with the statements I've seen you make, so congrats to you also. I am right though when I say you get your talking points from Faux News right? I frequent right wing websites or forums and I read the same talking points you spew out, so I figure that's where you get them from. Congrats on that too. PS it's not congrads and you can add teabaggers onto that list of uninformed ignorants like swift boaters, birthers, and faux news watchers, they are one and the same.
REAmerican June 04, 2011 at 11:32 PM
I'd rather suffer in this country under the cruel cruel cruel strangle hold of socialism, then live under right wing republican fascism which is where we are headed. Corporate control of America, bankers over Americans, Wall Street over Main Street and lobbyists that make our votes meaningless. Socialism = not so scary. Fascism = Democracy in decay.
Dr.Doom June 05, 2011 at 01:18 AM
REAmerican - too bad you dont realize they all the same. They all entertainers and are to be taken for entertainment purpose only. If you take any of them seriously you have all other set of problems. If you want anyone to take you seriously and not as pure entertaiment and example for kids how not to behave - you should act less like them and more like a grown up.
Kevin Brennan June 05, 2011 at 02:40 AM
Bruce, Wondering why you think there is an empty seat?
Joseph Dunsay June 05, 2011 at 11:28 PM
REAmerican, I disagree with your definitions of "socialism" and "fascism". Do you accept the Mirriam-Webster dictionary as a reliable source for definitions? If so, we can go there to clear up your confusion.
Joseph Dunsay June 05, 2011 at 11:29 PM
Punkin, as always, you bring some sound reason to the debate. Ken F, you made some good points here.
Danny June 06, 2011 at 01:45 AM
REAmerican....youre more like michael moore? you actually admit this? thats embarrassing. he is an awful freakin human being i dont care which party you associate yourself with.
REAmerican June 06, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Really? Why? He's had some excellent documentaries. And the other 4 people Punkin mentioned are outstanding people in your eyes right? Birthers better than Michael Moore? Glenn Beck > Mike LMAO!? Swift Boaters better than Mike? At least Mike isn't a liar compared to those 3 groups/people. You're embarrasing.

Redrider765 June 06, 2011 at 01:17 PM
Huh? He had some excellent documentaries? Are you kidding? If you want an excellent documentary, then perhaps you should watch something that relies less on shock value, twisting things out of context or ambush tactics. There are tons of excellent documentaries that are completely in keeping w/ a liberal mentality out there to choose from. None are by Moore. BTW - if you think his documentaries are so great, how about next time you get sick you go to Cuba and see how great their hospitals & doctors really are. Trust me, I know plenty of Cubans and none of them ever received decent health care there unless they had tons of dollars in their pockets when they showed up for treatment. The Cuban government even banned the film Sicko b/c they feared a popular backlash b/c even they know how false Moore's claims are.
Ken F. June 06, 2011 at 04:59 PM
To REA... one name.... Hitler.
REAmerican June 06, 2011 at 05:11 PM
Hitler did not practice Socialism, can you explain how the Nazi's practiced socialism? They were not socialists because they had the word "socialist" in the "NAZI" either if that's what you mean. That's the same as the way Faux news calls itself "Fair and Balanced" it's basically a lie statement. one word in response....wrong.
Redrider765 June 06, 2011 at 05:57 PM
No time to list them all but I'll let my favorite liberal author go through a few with you. http://www.slate.com/id/2102723/
Ken F. June 06, 2011 at 06:31 PM
A good explaination of how it was is in here. http://mises.org/daily/1937 I don't care to muddy up this thread further. I repectfully disagree with you.
REAmerican June 06, 2011 at 08:41 PM
That's not a good explanation at all really and very few characteristics of socialism even apply to the nazis, I respectfully disagree with you also, as do most historians. Have a day.
Joseph Dunsay June 07, 2011 at 12:15 AM
Does this mean you reject the Mirriam-Webster dictionary? What is the basis of your rejection?
Dr.Doom June 07, 2011 at 01:41 AM
Even though i'm not too crazy about American Health Care ($ wise and the relationsip to the Insurance Companies) in general. Still when comparing different systems one should be truthful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvmQHo8I9TI
REAmerican June 07, 2011 at 02:12 AM
The definitions in the Merriam-Webster dictionary are fine, I also included a bit more meat and potatoes in the links I've provided in order to be more thorough. I had trouble initially finding your source for a "Mirriam-Webster", but soon found out it was a spelling error on your part, I'm sure it was a typo on your part. I've included your favorite source for spelling and words below for you. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fascism http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/socialism
REAmerican June 07, 2011 at 02:28 AM
it's so ironic to see you type one should be truthful and yet not demand truth from your own party, ironic and hypocritical all in one. good stuff even though make a good point about our own healthcare industry. So the part about Cuba is a small portion of his movie, and I would point out a poor country ruled by a communist dictator. The points made about MANY others countries and the comparisons of healthcare are not like the Cuban one. If our system of healthcare for profit were so good then why are so many people not in a plan and why is it hurting so many American businesses with skyrocketing costs that are gouging the American public, just like the oil industry and speculators are doing with gas prices. I guess our system is just like Cuba's where only the ELITE get healthcare and get to use the pretty hospitals and get cured, F the poor and let them die. Just remember when you vote republican in the future you are voting to hurt Americans, not help. You are voting to kill medicare, kill social security and give tax cuts to the rich and raise your own taxes. Don't be fooled again and shoot yourself in the foot. Corporate wealthfare loves republican voters.
Ken F. June 07, 2011 at 02:57 AM
The answer for your first question is "I don't know, but what does that have to do with the discussion? I never said nor implied that we are on a path to socialism anywhere in this thread. The answer to your second question is "Yes" so the tone and manner by which you state one definition of the term socialism seems a bit condescending. Then you call me a genius. Thank you. Then you mention that I don't know the difference between socialism and being a communist.! When did I ever mention communist? It's OK... I know you meant communism not communist. Then you go on to say "Seems YOUR party of NO NO NO..." My Party? I hold no affiliation to any party at all. What is this party you think I belong to? On the subject of oil subsidies, are we subsidizing them now? Who's in office now? I'm sure of one thing about the next election though. My taxes will still go up, as they always have, with any president that will sit in the big white house.

Christie took a state helicopter to Cuba to have his blood pressure checked?
The Truth June 07, 2011 at 01:57 PM
Why is it that the forums here have to degenerate to name calling? And so many of you, on both sides, seem to be merely regurgitating the platitudes and vague comments being spewed on the national level by radio and television entertainment news pundits. Whether the topic here is the Governor's state helicopter or the local school district funding formula, many of you seem incapable of staying on topic and escalate the chatter to the levels of ridiculous. Surely there are places on the internet for you to spew your national political rhetoric, but this is supposed to be a local forum, addressing local issues. Can't we all just focus?
REResident June 07, 2011 at 05:52 PM
Isn't that THE TRUTH! LOL Thank you!
REAmerican June 07, 2011 at 08:44 PM
I guess if Punkin and REResident can stop their ignorant statements devoid of facts, I can curb my freedom of speech for you. How's that sound?
REResident June 08, 2011 at 01:47 AM
This forum was provided for community citizens to be able to voice their opinions and have an open dialog of ideas and comments. But it is ashame that individuals like REAmerican enjoys ramming his/her agenda and ideology down the throats of individuals that do not have the same ideology or agrees with his/her beliefs. Kind of like the school yard bully that puts his/her spin on other individual comments and enjoys hurling insults. From all the comments I've read of REAmerican anyone that is not on his/her side of the fence is ignorant. Pretty boring world that would be, if we all thought alike, no one would be posting anything here. My last word on this subject to all is please extend the same respect to each other with the same respect we expect to be treated. Hurl away REAmerican.
