Washington Should be More Like Us, Glen Rock Councilwoman Says

If perhaps the most dysfunctional Congress in history needs an example in civics, they should take a trip up to Glen Rock, according to Councilwoman Joan Orseck.

Sworn in to a third term with fellow incumbent Carmine Nogara Wednesday night at the borough's reorganization meeting, Orseck highlighted one key to good governance.

"We argue, don't agree but we compromise and get things done. I only wish the people in Washington could compromise and do their jobs," she said before raucous applauds drowned out her voice.

Messages of effective leadership and a willingness to work through issues rang out consistently at the annual reorganization meeting.

Longtime councilman Art Pazan was unanimously appointed to serve as Glen Rock Borough Council President in 2013, taking the reins from Nogara.

First elected to the council in 2005, Pazan, a Republican, will swap responsibilities as chairman of finance to oversee building development and public property, Mayor John van Keuren said.

Fresh off a November election win, Nogara remarked he was confident the "hard working" Pazan would effectively work with the all-Republican council in the new year.

Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Joanne Perry, back to serve another year, received much applauds and kudos from the dais for her handling of Hurricane Sandy.

"Joanne's performance was outstanding and remarkable," van Keuren said, pointing to what he called solid communication between departments, agencies and residents.

The meeting also featured an appearance by Assemblyman Timothy Eustace (D-38). Eustace was impressed by the borough's ability to offer up Borough Hall as a warming center and charging station to residents during the storm. Many neighboring towns failed to be as accommodating, he said, commending van Keuren and Borough Administrator Lenora Benjamin for their efforts.

Addressing the residents in attendance, van Keuren said it was important to remember one thing, "We are here to serve you."
