Report: Security Changes Made at Glen Rock Schools

Implemented of a swipe card system and more locked doors among the changes, the Glen Rock Gazette reports.

It's now much more difficult to gain entry to borough schools thanks to numerous security upgrades, according to a recent report in the Glen Rock Gazette.

Citing statements made by Interim Superintendent Ray Albano, the paper reported elementary school doors will now remain locked even during pickup/dropoff times.

A salaried employee – potentially with a security or law enforcement background – will be buzzing people in from the Hamilton Ave. lobby at the middle school/high school, according to the report. A swipe-card system is being implemented.

Many of the changes were made at the start of the current school year, prior to the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.

An ad-hoc school security committee – comprised of various departments, school board members and police – was formed to evaluate short-comings.

"The group has worked diligently over the past 18 months to plan and implement improvements across the district," Albano wrote to parents in December. "Appropriate lockdown, fire and evacuation drills are practiced routinely and a plan is in place for upgrades to security equipment in all schools."
