The dedicated coaches of the U-8 Maroons travel soccer team humbly stepped aside for a legend – former MLS star Jeff Agoos took over as coach during practice last Friday, giving the kids a memory they won't soon forget.
Agoos, known in his playing days as a stout defenseman, was a five-time MLS champion and was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. He played in two World Cups and represented the U.S. in the Olympics during his impressive career.
Agoos now keeps busy as the director of soccer for the NY Red Bulls and as the technical director of competition for MLS.
"That he took the time to come to Ridgewood and coach our team is a true testament to his unwavering commitment to the sport," said Mike Winograd, an assistant coach. "It was a fun afternoon. The practice was great and, most importantly, it's something the boys will remember for the rest of their lives."
MLS’s Vice President of Club Services, Brad Pursel, also attended the practice.
"Inspiring kids and furthering their passion for the game is crucial," he said, according to a press release issued by the Maroons soccer club. "I can't think of many better ways to do that than having Jeff Agoos coach your practice."
"Jeff is an absolutely tremendous person and player," Winograd added.
