Ridgewood to Hold First Menorah Lighting

Event at Van Neste Square begins 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

A new tradition begins this week in downtown Ridgewood.

Marking the start of Chanukah on Wednesday night, the village will be holding its first annual public menorah lighting.

The council approved the display in September, after calls from Ridgewood residents who said the symbol would demonstrate inclusion and the strength of diversity in the town.

Organizers have worked in the weeks since the approval to fundraise for the event, which they hope will become an annual tradition.

Rabbi David Fine, the leader of Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center who helped organize the privately funded menorah lighting, recently spoke to the Jewish Standard for an article on the budding tradition.

“It’s been a wonderful opportunity to gather together with leaders of the Jewish community and for all the Jewish residents of Ridgewood to share their opinions,” he said. “We’ve seen the grassroots of the Jewish community in Ridgewood come together.”

The event, featuring music and refreshments, is open to the public and will be help at Van Neste Square, near the intersection of Oak Street and Ridgewood Avenue, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
