4th Annual Earth Day Poster Contest

R&S Landscaping's its fourth annual poster contest theme is “Flowering and Pollination.” R&S holds a contest each year around Earth Day to inspire creativity and encourage Bergen County students to be more aware of the diversity and activity in their gardens and local ecosystem.

The poster contest is open to Bergen County grade school students from the first through eighth grades. Students are asked to design a poster no larger than 11 by 17 inches in size, focusing on plants and trees that use flowers to produce seeds. Flowers are a source of particular beauty in the garden and they are a critical part of the plant’s life cycle. Artwork that includes New Jersey native flowering plants and trees such as Flowering Dogwood, Pink Azalea, and Jack in the Pulpit, will be given special notice.

Artwork must be drawn or painted on a flat surface with pencil, crayon, marker, paint, or pastel.  All posters must be submitted along with a completed entry form to R&S Landscaping by April 21 to be eligible for the contest. Entry forms can be obtained at www.rscape.com.

The first-place winner of the poster contest will receive a pizza party for their whole class – dessert will be provided by Ridgewood Whole Foods. Participants will have their original artwork displayed at Whole Foods Market in Ridgewood beginning Earth Day and into May. They will also be included on R&S Landscaping’s Web site and Facebook page.

For Earth Day 2014, R&S Landscaping wanted to bring attention to the important purpose of the flower – something many of us often take for granted We expect this contest will encourage students to learn about the life cycle of plants in a way that they can explore and experience for themselves close to home. Each year the students create some really amazing artwork. Each piece is unique - it’s great to see how they translate what they’ve learned about the garden.
